Massachusetts Sales Tax Weekend Coming Up

August 7, 2022

Massachusetts is set for a sales tax weekend in about five days.

The sales tax weekend is scheduled for Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14.

On those two days, the state’s 6.25 percent sales tax rate will  not apply most retail items less than $2,500.

The sales tax holiday does not include the following goods and services:

  • Meals
  • Motor vehicles
  • Motorboats
  • Telecommunications services
  • Gas
  • Steam
  • Electricity
  • Tobacco products
  • Marijuana or marijuana products
  • Alcoholic beverages

The state got a permanent sales tax holiday weekend as a result of the “grand bargain” signed into law by Governor Charlie Baker in June 2018. It created paid family and medical leave in the state, and will result in the state having a $15 an hour minimum wage by 2023; it also included the permanent sales tax holiday weekend.
