Massachusetts Sees Record Unemployment Claims … Again

April 2, 2020

Massachusetts just set a new record — in unemployment claims filed.

In the week ending on Saturday, March 28, there was a state record 181,062 new unemployment claims filed on top of the 148,452 filed the week before.

As reports, prior to these past two weeks, there had not been a single week in the past 20 years the number of Bay Staters filing for unemployment exceeded 30,000.

Between the weeks of Saturday, March 21 and Saturday, March 28, the state processed 329,514 new unemployment claims; that is equivalent to 9 percent of the state’s workforce.

By comparison, in the first week in March, there were just 4,712 new unemployment claims filed.

Nationally, there have been about 9.9 million unemployment claims in the past two weeks. The nearly 6.6 million who filed unemployment last week set a new record in the United States. They beat the record set the week before of about 3.3 million.
