Maura Healey Backs In-State Tuition For Illegal Immigrant Plan In Massachusetts State Senate Budget

May 15, 2023

The Massachusetts Senate wants illegal immigrants to be eligible for in-state tuition in the Commonwealth — and so does Governor Maura Healey.

The state Senate’s proposed fiscal year 2024 budget has not been finalized yet, but the budget is expected to include a provision that would make this change, according to GBH News.

The budget bill, which is not yet public, will likely attempt to extend eligibility to illegal immigrants who attend a Massachusetts high school for at least three years and either graduate or get a General Educational Development equivalency degree.

Healey said she is pleased by the proposal.

“Many of whom have been here their entire lives, have gone through K-12, but then find themselves without an opportunity to afford continuing on in college,” Healey recently told reporters. “So I think that that’s a really good thing and it’s a reason you’ve seen so many other states do it already.”

Thus far, the state Senate has not provided a cost estimate for this measure.
