Maura Healey To Become Governor Thursday, January 5

January 3, 2023

Massachusetts will have a new governor this week.

Governor-elect Maura Healey, a Democrat, is set to take office this week on Thursday, January 5, 2023. She is replacing Governor Charlie Baker, a Republican, who will finish out an eight-year tenure as governor over the next few days.

Healey, who has served as the state’s attorney general since 2015, defeated former state representative Geoff Diehl (R-Whitman) in the governor’s race in November 2022. Healey got 64 percent of the vote; Diehl got 35 percent.

Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll will serve as Healey’s lieutenant governor; she had been rumored to have an interest in running for higher office several times before making a run for lieutenant governor last year.
