Mike Eruzione Endorses Pro-Life Republican Caroline Colarusso For Congress

November 3, 2020

Mike Eruzione won an Olympic gold medal on the U.S. men’s hockey team in 1980 on a team that was an underdog, and he recently voiced his support for another underdog:  Caroline Colarusso.

Eruzione endorsed Colarusso, the Stoneham selectman and pro-life Republican running for a U.S. House seat in Massachusetts’s Fifth Congressional District against incumbent U.S. Representative Katherine Clark (D-Melrose).

The endorsement came via video over the weekend.

“In 1980, nobody gave us a chance to win an Olympic gold medal,” he said. “I’m Mike Eruzione from the ’80 Olympic hockey team. We called it a miracle then. It wasn’t a miracle. It was an accomplishment by a group of athletes who believed in ourselves and believed in each other, and I believe in this young lady right here. Support Caroline. We all want her vote [in Congress]. We want another miracle too.”

Colarusso said she was thrilled by the endorsement in a press release sent to New Boston Post by her communications staff.

She said in many ways, it symbolizes the election.

“This endorsement is the thrill of a lifetime,” said Colarusso. “Mike Eruzione and the USA team captured the heart of our nation in 1980 scoring the goal that sparked Team USA to beat the Soviet Union Hockey Team and go on to win the Gold Medal. It was exactly what our country needed at a time of national malaise. Our hostages had been taken and we could not get them back. It was a low point for American self esteem. The USA Hockey Team win was symbolic to so many who saw it as freedom versus communism and freedom won.”

“Everyone was proud to be an American and especially those of us from Massachusetts where Eruzione and many of his teammates were from,” she added. “I am grateful for Mike’s confidence in me and humbled by his endorsement. My entire family and I are huge Eruzione fans, we love ice hockey, the Olympics, and America. We are all from Boston and we vividly remember the ‘Miracle on Ice’ game when Eruzione scored and the crowd erupted and it lifted our country. ”

Part of the reason why the endorsement meant so much to Colarusso is because she played hockey growing up, as her campaign’s communications director Tony Conte noted.

Additionally, Colarusso recently earned the endorsement of the Massachusetts Citizens For Life FED PAC. She is the only federal candidate in Massachusetts who earned that distinction this year.

At the time, the MCFL FED PAC wrote in a statement, “Colarusso has been identified as a leader committed to protecting society’s most vulnerable — the preborn, mothers, the sick, and the elderly — through legislative efforts that ensure a respect for human life in our law.”
