Mount Ida Seniors To College Brass: Why Don’t You Just Skip Our Graduation?

Mount Ida College seniors upset that the trustees have decided to close the school have asked the president and trustees not to go to the graduation.

The president and trustees say they’ll honor the request.

Mount Ida officials announced earlier this month that the school would close soon. The college had nearly $70 million of debt in 2016, according to MassLive.com.

The University of Massachusetts plans to buy the Newton campus by assuming the debt and use it as a satellite of its flagship school in Amherst.

Mount Ida students have been offered guaranteed admission to one of the less-sought-after campuses of the state university — UMass-Dartmouth — but many are distraught about the suddenness of the announcement so late in the school year and their lack of options.
