Peter Durant Joins Massachusetts Senate As Fourth Republican

November 29, 2023

Former Massachusetts state representative Peter Durant (R-Spencer) is now a state senator.

Durant joined the state Senate to represent the Worcester and Hampshire District on Wednesday, November 29, according to Politico.

His swearing-in comes after he beat state Representative Jon Zlotnik (D-Worcester) 52.5 percent to 47.5 percent in a special election on Tuesday, November 7.

The seat had been vacant since then-state Senator Anne Gobi (D-Spencer) left in June to become the state government’s new rural affairs director in Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s administration.

The Worcester and Hampshire District, which Gobi represented, includes Gardner, Worcester (Ward 7, Precincts 2, 4, 5, 6; Ward 9, Precincts 3 and 4), Barre, Brookfield, East Brookfield, Hardwick, Holden, Hubbardston, Leicester, New Braintree, North Brookfield, Oakham, Paxton, Phillipston, Princeton, Rutland, Spencer, Sterling, Templeton, West Brookfield, Westminster, and Ware.

Democrats currently outnumber Republicans in the Massachusetts Senate by 36 to 4.
