Pro-Muslim-Students Resolution of Boston City Council Identifies ‘Largely White-Christian-Dominated Society’

March 23, 2024

A Boston City Council resolution expressing support for Muslim students in the city’s public schools puts it in the context of living in a “largely white-Christian-dominated society.”

The resolution calls for Boston public schools to provide accommodations so that Muslims can practice their religion during the school day, including times and spaces for prayer, food options that Muslims aren’t forbidden to eat, soap and water for Muslims to purify themselves, adequate time for Muslims to make up schoolwork after they observe Muslim holy days, and gym uniforms that allow Muslims to cover their bodies during gym class.

But the resolution also makes references to race and another religion.

“Religious involvement plays an important role in mental health, especially among marginalized ethnic communities by promoting culture and identity in a largely white-Christian-dominated society,” the resolution states.

The principal sponsor of the resolution was city councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson, a Sunni Muslim born in Cape Verde who represents the city’s District 7, which includes Roxbury, Dorchester, Fenway, and part of the South End.

The Boston City Council unanimously approved the resolution during a council meeting Wednesday, March 6.

The conversation begins at 3:09:30 of the video of the meeting.

New Boston Post has published the text of the resolution and images of the pages, available by clicking here.
