Rabid Beaver Attacks Man Swimming In Connecticut River

A beaver with rabies bit a man in the arm and chest while the man was swimming in the Connecticut River, local authorities said.

The unidentified man was swimming Sunday evening, May 28 in Hatfield, a town of about 3,300 in western Massachusetts when the attack took place, according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

Hatfield is northeast of Northampton.

A town official told the Daily Hampshire Gazette that witnesses said the man was attacked by the beaver three times, and, according to the story, “was still latched onto his arm” when he made it to a nearby beach.

The beaver was later killed by authorities. A specimen tested positive for rabies.

The man is reportedly recovering at home.
