Reopen Golf Courses, State Senate Candidate Jay McMahon Says

April 28, 2020

Bourne lawyer Jay McMahon, who is running for the Massachusetts Senate in the Plymouth & Barnstable district as a Republican, is calling for reopening golf courses.

McMahon said he thinks the courses could open safely and not pose a threat to spread coronavirus.

“While golf courses are considered ‘non-essential’ businesses according to the Governor, it doesn’t make sense to keep them closed. The game naturally keeps players at social distancing.  It is also a good form of exercise. And, it gets people out of the house! Golf Courses can easily adopt reasonable measures and guidelines to keep golfers safe. That’s why I believe that we need to allow all of the Golf Courses in the Commonwealth to open immediately,” McMahon said in a written statement.

Two weeks ago, McMahon said there should be a plan in place to review all of the businesses deemed non-essential by the state and they should have the opportunity to submit their plans to the state on how they would safely reopen if given the opportunity.

“No business is ‘non-essential’ if you are the owner of it, or if you work for it and rely upon it for a paycheck.  In fact, for you, it is absolutely essential and vital for your survival!” McMahon said in a written statement.

The Plymouth and Barnstable District in the Massachusetts Senate covers six towns:  Plymouth, Kingston, Pembroke, Bourne, Falmouth, and Sandwich.

McMahon is the Republican nominee. The Democratic nominee is Falmouth selectman Susan Moran.

A special election to fill the vacant seat is currently scheduled for Tuesday, May 19.
