Repeal Ballot Question of Driver’s-Licenses-for-Illegal-Immigrants Law OK’d

June 28, 2022

Opponents of allowing illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses in Massachusetts have until August 24 to collect 40,000 signatures of registered voters to put a referendum on the November 2022 state ballot.

The Massachusetts Attorney General’s office approved the wording of the proposed ballot question on Monday, June 27 – 12 days after the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s office asked for a legal opinion on the proposed measure from the state Attorney General.

Republicans who support the repeal accused the state Attorney General, Maura Healey, of slow-walking issuing an opinion on the referendum language because she supports allowing illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses. Healey is the presumptive Democratic nominee for governor this year.

On June 9, the Massachusetts Legislature, dominated by Democrats, enacted a statute allowing illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses, over the veto of Governor Charlie Baker, a Republican.
