May 1, 2018

A retired Worcester cop shot and wounded a 29-year-old man he found in his yard in the middle of the night, police said.

The 56-year-old man came upon the intruder between midnight and 1 a.m. Sunday. When he tried to escort him off the property, a fight ensued, and when the intruder threatened to shoot the homeowner, the homeowner shot him, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

The homeowner shortly before the incident had called police after seeing the man apparently trying to break into a car on the street.

Worcester police arrested the intruder on a standing warrant for breaking and entering from an unrelated case. His injuries are considered non-life threatening.
