Rhode Island Governor Backs Mike Bloomberg for President

February 5, 2020

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has picked up the first endorsement of his campaign for president from a sitting governor.

Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo, a Democrat, announced her support for Bloomberg on Wednesday, February 5, saying the billionaire media mogul is the best person to unseat incumbent President Donald Trump.

“Mike is a problem-solver with a long track record of delivering results, and I’m proud to stand with him today,” Raimondo said in a written statement, according to Go Local Providence. “From fighting gun violence, to addressing climate change, to combating the opioid crisis and more, Mike understands the issues that impact our lives every day. We cannot risk another four years of President Trump’s destructive policies, and I know that Mike is the right leader to take him on.”

According to the Associated Press, Raimondo has referred to Bloomberg as her political idol in the past.

Bloomberg also supported her successful 2014 campaign for governor. Raimondo is Rhode Island’s first female governor.
