Rhode Island Second-Worst State To Drive In, Massachusetts Worst Traffic, Study Finds

January 23, 2020

Rhode Island is one of the worst states to drive in, according to a recent study conducted by WalletHub

The study ranked each of the 50 states in the United States and found that Rhode Island was the worst to drive in among those on the North American continent. It ranked 49th of the 50 states. Only Hawaii ranked lower on the list.

Rhode Island ranked poorly all around in the study, other than driver safety where it ranked sixth. In “traffic and infrastructure,” the state ranked 47th. In access to “vehicles and maintenance,”it ranked 46th, and in “cost of ownership and maintenance,” it ranked 44th.

Massachusetts ranked dead last in the study in “traffic and infrastructure,” which found it has the worst traffic of any state in America. In contrast, however, Massachusetts ranked 35th overall — because the state earned the top spot for vehicle safety.

Maine had the highest overall ranking of any of the New England states on the list, at 26th. After Massachusetts, Vermont was shortly behind (36th), then New Hampshire (38th), and then Connecticut (40th).
