Small Liberal Arts Colleges In Western Massachusetts Still Requiring Masks

August 29, 2022

Amherst College, Smith College, and Mount Holyoke College are all requiring students to wear masks indoors until at least mid-September.

Amherst College has an exception:  “mask will not be required inside residence halls or when alone in one’s private office with the door closed.”

Amherst College expects “a more relaxed masking protocol” by Monday, September 12.

Smith College plans to end the mask requirement on Friday, September 16, if public health statistics pass muster with school officials. Mount Holyoke College also plans to end the mask requirement on Friday, September 16.

At Hampshire College, the mask requirement doesn’t have a sunset provision.

“Masks will be required in all classes, labs, and other mandatory indoor academic activities, throughout the fall semester,” Hampshire College said in a written statement.

At Williams College in Williamstown, masks are required “as the default rule” during the fall semester but can be waived by the instructor.

The largest university in the area – the University of Massachusetts at Amherst – lifted its mask requirement on March 9and has not reinstated it.
