Sportswriting Was Governor Charlie Baker’s Favorite Job

May 19, 2018

Of the approximately 20 jobs Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has had, sportswriting may have been his favorite, he told a graduating class on Cape Cod this week.

Baker as a young man worked for several years for the Dedham Daily Transcript, a now-defunct newspaper in a town next to his hometown of Needham — but he “might not have been talented enough,” according to a paraphrase of his speech from the Cape Cod Times.

He told the students not to be afraid “to have more than one job along the way.”

The governor spoke on Friday to 61 graduates of Project Forward, a program for students with learning disabilities. The ceremony took place at Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable.

Ryan Madden, who studied to be a health care assistant, was honored as student of the year.

“This student is always willing to take the last place in line but is the first to volunteer,” program director Nicole Mark said of Madden, according to the Cape Cod Times.
