‘Theft’ of 18th Century Gravestone Solved

An 18th century gravestone reported stolen from a colonial-era cemetery in Falmouth turned out not to be stolen.

Instead, a contractor removed the headstone to repair it.

A man in his 50s wearing a black coat and a baseball cap who put the headstone in the back of his pickup truck had been asked by the family of the deceased person to do it.

The original posting on the Falmouth Police Department’s Facebook page drew dozens of comments from outraged readers, but also a few from people who suspected the removal for restoration, not thievery.
