Tim Wakefield Dies

October 2, 2023

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield died Sunday.

The knuckleballer was 57 and battling brain cancer.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Tim Wakefield, one of the most unique pitchers of his generation and a key part of the most successful era in the history of the Boston Red Sox,” Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.

Wakefield’s former teammate Curt Schilling broke the news that Wakefield had brain cancer on a podcast without the Wakefield family’s consent last week.

Wakefield helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004 and 2007 and was one of a handful of successful knuckleballers in Major League Baseball history.
