Trump Trumps Weld in Massachusetts

March 4, 2020

Former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld could not trump President Donald Trump’s popularity among Republicans in the Bay State on Super Tuesday.

The incumbent president trounced his primary opponent. As Politico reports, with 99 percent of votes counted, Trump had earned 87.7 percent of the vote compared to Weld’s 9.3 percent.

Previously, Weld had said that he hoped Massachusetts would be a stronger showing for him than New Hampshire, where he received 9 percent of the vote.

On Tuesday morning, Weld told New Boston Post outside of his voting station in Canton that he would not drop out of the race, regardless of what the results were on Super Tuesday. Rather, he said he is set to turn his focus to a pair of primaries:  Michigan on Tuesday, March 10 and Florida on Tuesday, March 17.

This was Weld’s second time appearing on a presidential election ballot in Massachusetts. He was the Libertarian Party’s vice presidential candidate in 2016.
