Tufts Creates New ‘Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora’ Department

Tufts University has created a new academic department called Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora.

The field of study has been covered by an interdisciplinary consortium since 2014. But only a department can hire faculty at Tufts.

A senior at Tufts credited the Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora consortium with giving “this intellectual space to find a language to describe our own personal experiences.”

“I think that a lot of the RCD faculty and the courses that they teach have been really critical in cementing the political consciousness that a lot of Tufts students who have taken classes in the RCD … have,” said Tiara Bhatacharya, according to the Tufts Daily.
