Two Massachusetts Golf Courses Plan To Re-Open – Governor Or No Governor

May 5, 2020

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker says he will not allow golf courses to open back up in the state until at least Monday May 18 because of the coronavirus emergency.

However, a couple of golf courses plan to open back up, anyway. As Newsweek reports, Kettle Brook Golf Club and Wachusett Country Club plan to reopen. Both courses are run by Cara Cullen and her three brothers.

Cullen said she has to reopen the courses or is in danger of going out of business.

Cullen said her mother-in-law died of coronavirus in March.

“I do know how serious this is,” she reportedly said. “I don’t think this is a hoax. I think it’s serious. And my four children never saw their grandmother again and haven’t been able to properly grieve. So I do recognize how real this virus is.”

Cullen said the courses will take safety precautions to try to prevent the virus from spreading.

As of the start of next week, 47 states will have golf courses open to the public, but Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maryland are not currently scheduled to be among them.
