UConn Trying To Wriggle Out of $10 Million Owed To Fired Basketball Coach

March 10, 2018

An NCAA investigation of purported improper workouts by the University of Connecticut basketball team has school officials citing a “just cause” clause to try to get out of paying fired Kevin Ollie $10 million.

“It could, however, be the starting point of negotiations for a buyout,” notes the Hartford Courant, which reported the firing Saturday morning.

The former Big East powerhouse, which now plays in the American Athletic Conference, has fallen on hard times of late.

UConn went 14-18 this season, losing in the first round of the conference tournament, after going 16-17 last season.

Ollie, 45, succeeded Jim Calhoun as head coach in 2012. He has $10 million remaining on his current contract, according to the Courant, but how much he will end up with is unclear.

UConn won the national championship in 2014 under Ollie.
