Vermont Elects First Woman To Congress and Second Democrat To U.S. Senate Ever

November 10, 2022

Before the 2022 midterm election, Vermont had never elected a woman to Congress.

That changed, as Becca Balint, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. House at-large seat, defeated Republican Liam Madden 63 percent to 28 percent, according to The New York Times.

Vermont was the last state in the union that had never sent a woman to Congress, according to NPR.

Balint has served as a Vermont state senator since 2015. She is the president pro tempore of the Vermont Senate.

She will succeed Peter Welch in the U.S. House; Welch was first elected to the post in 2007.

Welch didn’t seek re-election because he ran for U.S. Senate. He beat Republican Gerald Malloy 69 percent to 28 percent, and became the second Democrat ever to be elected as U.S. Senator in the Green Mountain state.

Welch will succeed Patrick Leahy in the U.S. Senate. He was the first Democrat elected to U.S. Senate from Vermont, in 1974.
