War on Plastic Bags Hits Granite Wall:
New Hampshire Senate Kills Anti-Plastic Straws, Anti-Plastic Bags Bills

May 15, 2019

The New Hampshire Senate has rejected bills aimed at plastic straws and plastic bags.

Democrats who control the chamber decided to abandon the measures Wednesday after debate on floor, according to The Concord Monitor.

New Hampshire House Bill 558 would have made it illegal for restaurants and other food-service businesses to provide plastic straws to customers “unless specifically requested.”

New Hampshire House Bill 560 would have banned thin-film plastic bags from grocery stores and retail stores, after a period of four months when the stores could have offered them to customers for 10 cents apiece.

Supporters say too much plastic is threatening the environment. Opponents call the measures unnecessary and cumbersome.

The bills died on the floor of the New Hampshire Senate on Wednesday, May 15.
