Wellesley High School Cancels ‘USA Day’ For Being Too Political
November 19, 2023
Wellesley High School administrators canceled a spirit theme day celebrating the United States for being too political.
Principal Jamie Chisum explained the decision to parents in a letter, according to Boston 25 News.
“The high school Administration decided not to go forward with that spirit theme because it felt really different than the other themes kids came up with for the week,” Chisum said. “We felt that the topic has been politicized beyond our school and we wanted to avoid politics.”
“We acknowledge that the impact for some people has been just the opposite of our intention and that we have inadvertently politicized this activity. I am definitely sorry for any negative effect this has had on kids and families,” he continued.
The spirit days are meant to build unity in the school building up to its Thanksgiving football game. Some of the themes include Throwback Thursday and Wild West Wednesday.
The USA Day would have been Friday, November 17, but “Fitness Friday” was organized in its stead.
According to a member of the school’s Student Unification Program, school administrators moved quickly against the proposal.
“The administration was not going to let this happen,” the female student said, according to Boston 25 News. “It wasn’t a topic for discussion.”
