Woman Who Scammed Scammer Charged With Theft

A New Hampshire woman who was a victim of identity fraud and theft by a foreign scammer in March decided to pull her own scam, police said.

The 51-year-old resident of Rochester, New Hampshire had her business account hacked and a laptop computer purchased and sent out of the country on her dime, police said.

She subsequently responded to a help-wanted ad on the Internet asking for someone to pick up a package at a UPS facility in Laconia and re-ship it to another address. Instead, police said, she kept the package — a computer — for herself and “shipped a box full of magazines,” according to The Union Leader.

She has been charged with theft by unauthorized taking.She has been charged with theft by unauthorized taking and was released on $1,000 personal recognizance bail. She is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 12.
