Barbara Bush Dies

April 17, 2018

Barbara Bush, the wife of former President George H.W. Bush, died Tuesday. She was 92.

Mrs. Bush, whose son George W. Bush served as president during the 2000s, is one of two women in American history to be wife of one president and mother of another. (The other is Abigail Adams.)

Her famous white hair turned that color when she was 28 during her grief over a 3-year-old daughter who died of leukemia.

Mrs. Bush was generally not outspoken about politics, but she did let it be known as first lady that she supported legal abortion and gun control, both positions that her husband and son at least formally opposed.

She promoted literacy as first lady.

She and George H.W. Bush, who is ailing, were married for 73 years.
