Boy Scouts To Drop Key Word From Name

May 2, 2018

The organization currently known as Boy Scouts of America plans to drop the word “Boy” from its name, as it prepares to accept girls starting this summer.

The new name will be “Scouts BSA,” according to Boy Scouts of America officials.

“Scout me in” will become a new catchphrase, according to Boy Scouts officials.

“As we enter a new era for our organization, it is important that all youth can see themselves in Scouting in every way possible. That is why it is important that the name for our Scouting program for older youth remain consistent with the single name approach used for the Cub Scouts,” said Michael Surbaugh, chief scout executive of the Boy Scouts of America, in a press release.

The Girl Scouts, meanwhile, see the Boy Scouts of America’s move to admit girls as an attack. The Associated Press reports that Girl Scouts officials are seeking to retain and recruit girls.

“Girl Scouts is the premier leadership development organization for girls,” said Sylvia Acevedo, the Girl Scouts’ CEO, according to AP. “We are, and will remain, the first choice for girls and parents who want to provide their girls opportunities to build new skills … and grow into happy, successful, civically engaged adults.”
