Google Maps To Identity Who Offers Abortions — And That Crisis Pregnancy Centers Don’t

August 27, 2022

Google is planning to let users know who offers abortions and who doesn’t.

The move comes as crisis pregnancy centers are being criticized for so-called “deceptive advertising.” Critics of crisis pregnancy centers say they are “limited,” since they don’t offer abortion.

Google’s new policy will be executed via Google Maps.

Earlier this week, Yelp started a similar initiative. Crisis pregnancy center listings on Yelp will come with a new “Consumer Notice.”

“This is a Crisis Pregnancy Center,” the notice says. “Crisis Pregnancy Centers typically provide limited medical services and may not have licensed medical professionals onsite.”

Crisis pregnancy centers in Massachusetts have faced legal pressure in recent months, with several Massachusetts municipalities attempting to ban what they call their “deceptive advertising” by them.

Three crisis pregnancy centers in Massachusetts have sustained property damage in attacks in recent weeks — one in Easthampton earlier this month and two in Worcester in July.
