Green Isn’t Environmentally Friendly Enough, Says Maker of Sprite

August 1, 2022

For 61 years, the soda Sprite has come in an instantly recognizable green bottle.

No longer.

Beginning Monday, August 1, Coca-Cola, the company that owns Sprite, will stop producing Sprite in green bottles and instead use white ones.

The reason?

Green plastic isn’t recyclable.

Well, that’s not exactly it. Apparently, green plastic isn’t recycled as often as new bottles, instead being turned into “single-use items like clothing and carpeting,” according to a press release by the company

Other green plastic bottles used by Coca-Cola brands such as Fresca, Seagram’s, and Mello Yello will be transformed in the coming months.
