Replace Federal Income Tax With National Sales Tax, Florida Candidate Says

August 9, 2018

Ron DeSantis, 39, one of two Republicans running for governor of Florida, is calling for replacing the federal income tax with a 23 percent national sales tax.

The sales tax, which he calls the Fair Tax, would eliminate most federal taxes.

“It totally puts the lobbyists out of business,” DeSantis said during a debate Wednesday, according to the Miami Herald.

DeSantis, a former military prosecutor who is serving his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, is a pro-life tea-party conservative. He has been endorsed by President Donald Trump.

His opponent in the August 28 primary runoff is U.S. Representative Adam Putnam, a fourth-term House member who is chairman of the House Republican Conference.
