Romanian Man: I’m Alive; Court: You’re Dead

A 63-year-old Romanian man who had been working in Turkey for more than 20 years returned to his native country to find out that legally he is dead.

And a court is refusing to overturn that decision. His death certificate is valid, but no other government documents are available to him.

His wife registered him as dead while he was away, and a court is refusing to revisit that designation, saying the appeal was filed too late, according to the Associated Press.

Constantin Reliu says he can’t find out from government officials whether he is divorced or still married — his wife now lives in Italy and apparently is out of touch. He can’t get a job or government documents, either.

“I am a living ghost,” he told AP.
