A former CIA deputy director who now works as a senior security contributor for CBS News said earlier this week that the joint bulletin released by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security sounding the threat of potential Independence Day terrorist attacks should not be treated lightly.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re sitting here a week from today talking about an attack over the weekend in the United States,” said Michael Morell, who also served as the CIA’s acting director twice in 2011 and again from 2012 to 2013. “That’s how serious this is.”

With thousands flocking to Boston’s Fourth of July celebration, police will be on high alert for attacks, according to a Boston Channel report. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said every event like the Boston Marathon and Fourth of July are high intensity security events.

“There’s going to be a lot more scrutiny on bags–not just on the esplanade but on the MBTA,” Walsh said. “So we just ask the public to keep an eye out too. Unfortunately the world has changed and we have to be more diligent.”
