Welcome to South Boston

Once a working-class Irish neighborhood, South Boston (known as “Southie” to locals) has, in recent years, become a vibrant neighborhood filled with young families and urban professionals. Part of the attraction of Southie is, of course, the easy access to downtown Boston and public transportation. But residents say they were also drawn to Southie by its Irish heritage and strong sense of community.

In March, city residents flock to the area decked out in green for the annual South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Today, the waterfront boasts breathtaking views and hosts an array of restaurants, bars, hotels, offices, residential buildings and the Institute for Contemporary Art. South Boston is also home to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center that hosts international and local events.

One of the best-known local secrets is the Lawn on D that hosts rotating outdoor artwork, entertainment and an outdoor bar. This Thursday at 5 p.m. marks the first day of the next installation that will feature giant, inflatable light-up rabbits.
