Will the incumbent governor of Massachusetts, Charlie Baker, run for a third term?
While several political sources have told a NewBostonPost reporter informally over the past few months they to expect it to happen, Baker hasn’t said either way yet. However, he hasn’t ruled it out and continues to raise money. September 2021 was one of his better months in terms of fund raising as governor.
Baker raised $173,348 last month; it was the most he had raised in any given month in the past two years. The last time he raised more money was September 2019, a month where he hauled in $196,105.78, according to the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance. With that fund-raising effort, Baker had $666,849.20 cash on hand as of the start of October.
Additionally, lieutenant governor Karyn Polito, who hasn’t announced her intentions for next year either, raised $63,955.00. She has $2,265,656.53 in her campaign account, according to the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance. There have been rumors that if Baker does not seek a third term that she may end up running for governor next year.
If either of them wants to get the nomination, however, it may require winning a primary that among other candidates would include the Donald Trump-endorsed Geoff Diehl, a former state representative from Whitman. Diehl raised $11,511.01 last month and has $25,773.54 in his campaign account, according to the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance.
On the Democratic side, there is one potential candidate in a similar situation to Baker; Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey. If Healey were to run, it’s expected that she would also be a contender for her party’s nomination. However, Healey has yet to say whether or not she plans to run. Healey raised $35,406.96 last month and has $3,260,295.79 cash on hand, according to the Office of Campaign and Political Finance. Her total available funds are more than Baker and Polito have combined.
