Should President Joe Biden be the Democratic Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 2024?

Among Democratic voters, a lot of them say no, according to a Marist poll released earlier this week.

Three varying opinions were expressed by Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents in the poll. In all, 44 percent of these voters said that they wanted someone other than Biden at the top of the ticket in the 2024 presidential election. Only 36 percent of those Democrats and Democrat-leaners want Biden to run again in 2024. Additionally, 20 percent said they weren’t sure what the right answer was there.

The poll result comes at a time when President Biden has sinking approval ratings, according to FiveThirtyEight. The majority of the country disapproves of him — a major shift in public opinion since when he first took office earlier this year.

Biden had a 53 percent approval rating and a 36 percent disapproval rating in January 2021, when he took office. Nowadays?  He has a 42.8 percent approval rating and a 50.8 disapproval rating — meaning that his net approval rating is negative eight points.

Since Biden had a 17-point net positive approval rating when he first took office, that means it’s a net 25-point drop in his approval after less than nine months in office.

The Marist poll did not ask the Democrats and Democrat leaners if they wanted vice president Kamala Harris to replace Biden at the top of the ticket in 2024. However, Harris’s approval rating is about as low as Biden’s. Harris has a 42.5 percent approval rating and a 51 percent disapproval rating, according to RealClearPolitics.

Biden has said that he plans to run again, according to Politico.

If Biden were to run for re-election in 2024 and win, he would be 82 years old at the start of his second term.
