A liberal Democrat in the Massachusetts Legislature wants you to think about cancelling your Christmas plans.

State representative Mindy Domb (D-Amherst) wants people to have second thoughts about what they plan to do for Christmas, which is this upcoming Saturday.

She quote-tweeted an article from The Washington Post on Monday evening that said that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus is now the most prevalent strain of the virus. The story cited the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as saying that 73 percent of new coronavirus cases in the United States are the Omicron variant.

Domb issued a warning to her followers upon seeing the news:  Rethink your Christmas plans this year.

“73% of NEW cases,” Domb tweeted Monday, December 20. “Be careful. Consider your holiday plans and if you would make them today given this news. Remain open to changing or canceling.”

A fellow liberal Democrat in the Massachusetts Legislature, state representative Christina Minicucci (D-North Andover), agreed with Domb’s assessment.

Minicucci revealed on Twitter that she changed her Christmas plans as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

“73%!!! One month ago we were able to have a ‘typical’ Thanksgiving with plans to return to a ‘typical’ Christmas,” Minicucci tweeted Monday, December 20. “I just changed our holiday plans and it will just be our family now. We are as vaccinated and protected as we can be, but we can’t risk spreading Covid to others.”

Centers for Disease Control director Dr. Rochelle Walensky told The Associated Press earlier this month that the Omicron variant is what she called “mild.”

“What we generally know is the more mutations a variant has, the higher level you need your immunity to be. … We want to make sure we bolster everybody’s immunity. And that’s really what motivated the decision to expand our guidance,” Walensky told The Associated Press.

Domb has a lifetime American Conservative Union rating of 0, out of a possible 100. Progressive Massachusetts gave Domb a rating of 83 (out of a possible 100) for the 2019-2020 legislative session.

Minicucci has a lifetime American Conservative Union rating of 5.88, out of a possible 100. Progressive Massachusetts gave Minicucci a rating of 82 (out of a possible 100) for the 2019-2020 legislative session.

Domb could not be reached for comment on Tuesday. Nor could Minicucci.
