A vote for President Joe Biden was a vote to end the coronavirus pandemic, Biden said while campaigning last year.

Now, Biden says as president he can’t fix the problem.

“Look, there is no federal solution,” Biden said on a call with the National Governors Association on Monday, December 27. “This gets solved at the state level.”

Biden said that the federal government will be there to help states combat the pandemic, but he delegated the primary responsibility to the states.

The topic came up when Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, a Republican, asked about the federal government’s plan to distribute rapid coronavirus tests.

“We just have to stay focused and continue to work together,” Biden said. “My message to the governor is simple. If you need something, say something. And we’re going to have your back in any way we can.”

It’s a stark contrast from Biden’s approach to the virus when he was running for president last year against incumbent Republican Donald Trump.

Back then, Biden criticized the president for a lack of federal action to combat the virus and said that he would end the virus if elected.

“We’re in a situation now where the New England Medical Journal — one of the serious, most serious journals in the whole world — said for the first time ever that this, the way this President has responded to this crisis has been absolutely tragic,” Biden said of Trump during a presidential debate an October 22, 2020. “And so folks, I will take care of this, I will end this, I will make sure we have a plan.”

Biden also tweeted multiple times that he would get the virus under control, as a part of his campaign pitch.

“I know how to lead this nation through a crisis because I’ve done it before. I won’t waste any time getting this virus under control and building our country back better,” Biden tweeted on August 26, 2020.

He reiterated that point in a tweet on October 27, 2020 that read, “If you give me the honor of serving as your president, I won’t waste any time getting this virus under control and building our nation back better.”

And on November 2, 2020, he tweeted, “A Biden-Harris administration will: – Implement nationwide mask mandates – Ensure access to regular, reliable, and free testing – Accelerate the development and distribution of safe and effective treatments and vaccines We won’t waste any time getting this virus under control.”

More than 800,000 Americans have died of coronavirus so far in this pandemic, according to official federal statistics.
