Disney Is Making A Mistake In Florida

Disney decided to get involved with an education issue in politics — and it made a big mistake.

Disney came out against the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill that was passed in Florida — a term used largely by people who didn’t read the bill. It’s a common-sense bill that says that sexuality and gender don’t belong in kindergarten- to-third-grade education.

Essentially, it keeps woke gender ideology away from five-year-olds. It affirms that children who believe in Santa Claus don’t need to learn about a bunch of made-up genders whether it’s through the genderbread person, genderbread cookie, gender unicorn, or some other mode.

Disney has decided that this is terrible and that it will work to repeal the law.

“Florida’s HB 1557, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law,” the company’s statement reads. “Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that. We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country.”

This is disgraceful stuff from Disney.

Disney is supposed to be a family-oriented business. It makes television and film content for children. And Disney is the largest employer in Florida, in large part because of Disney World — the resort with several theme parks where families from across the country go on vacation.

Disney should respect its diverse clientele. Not every family in America is a polyamorous throuple with blue hair and septum piercings. Florida is a conservative-leaning state. That is the way the state wants to operate. Florida elected Ron DeSantis governor, and it elected majorities in the state legislature who support this bill.

If liberal and progressive parents want to tell their five-year-olds about polyamorous pansexuals, they can do that. However, they don’t need the school to teach it to their kids; they can tell their kids about it themselves. They can also have their kids read books about the topic without the school.

What this is about, however, is taxpayer-funded institutions and what they should teach children. These are government employees that work for the people, not the other way around. A myriad of material exists that schools don’t teach. If Florida doesn’t want this material taught to little kids, so be it.

Some families don’t want this stuff in their children’s education. Companies should respect that. It doesn’t make them bigoted or hateful people.

Also, it’s hard to take Disney seriously when it kowtows to China. In the end credits of its 2020 film Mulan, a live-action remake of the 1990s animated film, it thanked eight government entities in the Xinjiang region of China. That’s the part of China where more than 1 million Uyghur Muslims are in concentration camps.

Putting people in concentration camps and committing genocide against them is horrific. It deserves global condemnation. Disney won’t comment on that. Yet, Disney worries that public schoolers in Florida might only start to learn about transgenderism in school when they’re nine years old.

If schools want to reform their education, they should teach more life skills and have more opportunities for kids to earn college credits.  That will improve education; adding woke material will not do that.

It will just result in more people pulling their kids out of public schools.
