Massachusetts state Representative Jamie Zahlaway Belsito (D-Topsfield) is no fan of the State of Israel; she recently accused the government of Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinian people.

“The US must acknowledge that the @Israel administration is an apartheid run thuggery terrorist regime on a mission to kill Palestinians,” she tweeted on December 30, 2022. “Killing and land taking has nothing to do with anti-semitism. It is genocide.”

The modern State of Israel was founded in 1948 as a homeland for the Jews three years after they endured a genocide in Europe that killed six million people, commonly known as the Holocaust.

Belsito could not immediately be reached for comment on Monday, January 2, 2023.

Belsito, 49, was first elected November 30, 2021, in a special election to replace a Republican representative, Bradford Hill, who resigned to take a job as a commissioner on the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.

Belsito represents the Fourth Essex District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. It consists of the North Shore towns of Rowley, Ipswich, Topsfield, Hamilton, Wenham, and Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Belsito is the founder of the Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance.

She did not run for re-election in November 2022. Her term ends Thursday, January 5, 2023 — a week after she published her tweet about Israel.

In her farewell speech on the floor of the state House of Representatives on December 12, 2022, Belsito said, according to State House News Service:

“I am the 220th woman to be elected to this chamber out of over 22,000-plus men. I am the only state representative ever elected from Topsfield — please put that under your Jeopardy facts, that will come useful someday. I’m the only Arab-American woman ever elected to the House of Representatives and I’m the only Syrian-American woman ever elected to an office in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Perhaps these facts seem irrelevant to many, but to my community, to my family, to my girls, Rose and Hadia, these facts mean more than words can say because representation matters.”

Before NewBostonPost published this article, no media outlet had reported on Belsito’s tweet.
