Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey on Tuesday called the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump “horrifying” as she denounced political violence.

Healey, after an unrelated event in Cape Cod that marked her first public appearance since the shooting at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend, was asked her perspective on the incident.

“Horrifying, horrifying. You don’t want to see violence in any form anywhere, and you don’t want to see violence when it comes to a political rally or political violence, ” Healey told reporters. “It’s important that everybody across the board — all Americans, Democrat, Republican, anything and everything in between — denounce political violence in all its forms. There’s no place for it — there’s no tolerance for it in this country.”

Trump was shot in the ear during a rally Saturday, July 13  in Butler, Pennsylvania, in an attack later condemned by President Joe Biden and Massachusetts elected officials, including Healey, Senate President Karen Spilka, and state Attorney General Andrea Campbell. Healey, in a social media post Saturday night, said she was grateful for law enforcement’s swift response.

“I’m relieved the former President appears to be safe and my thoughts are with all who were at today’s rally,” Healey said on the social media platform widely known as Twitter.

The governor on Tuesday, July 16 also spoke about the importance of ensuring public places are secure, as federal authorities continue to investigate the Trump shooting.

“I’m relieved that the former president was O.K., is O.K.,” Healey said. “Terribly scary, and my heart goes out to the families of those who were injured or killed in Pennsylvania.”
