A male athlete won a women’s rowing race in Cambridge, Massachusetts earlier this month.

Brooke Moss, a male who identifies as transgender, competed in the under-23 women’s rowing event at the Cromwell Cup regatta on Sunday, July 21, in Cambridge — and won.

Moss topped four competitors, finishing the event in 4:09.4, according to the event’s web site; this time was nearly 30 seconds better than the 4:38.8 time from the runner-up, Sydney Romer.

Moss, a student at the Frank W. Olin College of Engineering (the event’s web site says), is a 2021 Longmeadow High School graduate, according to the rower’s Facebook page and the 2021 Longmeadow High School yearbook.

Additionally, Moss identifies as transgender in multiple X posts; it’s a profile listed as one of Moss’s social media accounts on Facebook

For example, Moss posted on September 18, 2020, “Wait I think I forgot … I’ve been 18 since March. Jokes’ on them tho, I’m trans.”

Additionally, Moss posted on October 17, 2022, “Aaaaaaaaaaa this is when I remember how exhausting it is to be trans on the internet.”

And, on November 19, 2022, Moss posted, “Ah yes my Silver 3 ass is definitely a cheater because I’m trans.”

Plus, a Facebook post from Moss’s father, Jonathan Moss, in 2018 called Moss “Benjamin” and refers to the rower as a “he.” However, if one clicks on the hyperlinked text that says Benjamin, it takes you to the Brooke Moss Facebook profile.

Furthermore, an obituary for Jonathan Moss’s father from 2008 says that he had four children at the time, including one named Benjamin — and none named Brooke.

Here is a description of the Cromwell Cup regatta from the event’s web site:

An all-day event, the Cromwell Cup is the largest summer regatta on the Charles River, with over 600 competitors of all ages (16 through 70+) and skill levels participating annually. Named after RBC member and 1964 Olympian Seymour Cromwell, the Cromwell Cup is a 1000-meter rowing race between Weeks Bridge and Magazine Beach on the Charles River. The event is run entirely by Riverside volunteers, encourages friendly competition on the Charles River, and promotes awareness of rowing in the Boston-Cambridge communities.

The event’s transgender athlete policy said, “Cromwell Cup welcomes all athletes to compete as their true and authentic self,” according to Regatta Central.

An X user named Sapphirus was the first to report on this transgender athlete victory.

Brooke Moss could not be reached for comment on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
