Abolish prisons?
That’s a position held by at least one Democratic candidate for the Massachusetts Governor’s Council.
Stacey Borden, a Democrat from Dorchester, supports prison abolition. She is running for the Fourth District seat on the council, primarying longtime incumbent Christopher Iannella (D-Boston). Another candidate, Ronald Iacobucci of Quincy, is also challenging Iannella in the Democratic Party primary in September.
Borden has expressed support for abolishing prisons a few times on social media.
That includes a post on June 23, 2021.
Here is what she wrote:
Shut it down CNN!! This dude doesn’t have a clue why Gun Violence spiked!!
This dude stated it’s because of the release of 80% of individuals released were violent, he said because weren’t are tough on crime because of advocates and other Dumb [expletive] he stated!!
The dude I’m speaking of is the ole Commissioner of NY (won’t give him power by saying his name)!
STOP IT!! Stop using demeaning, derogatory terms about us and stop separating transgressions (violent to non violent)
How about we’ve made mistakes and were punished for our mistakes, yes some grave mistakes, I won’t minimize them! Needless to say, we have a Crime and Punishment System no matter what you do!! We’re all treated the same!!
Abolish prisons
Abolish Injustices
Abolish Slavery
Similarly, Borden shared an NBC article on June 8, 2019, interviewing prison abolitionist Mariame Kaba about her support for abolishing prisons.
Borden wrote in the post sharing the article, “This sister is so on point!!! Great interview, a conversation that must continue!”
And, on Christmas Eve in 2018, Borden shared an article from Democracy Now titled “Angela Davis: We Owe It to People Who Came Before Us to Fight to Abolish Prisons.”
A Communist, Davis was once a member of the Black Panther Party and Communist Party USA.
The Massachusetts Governor’s Council, which meets on Wednesdays, confirms judges to the state court system, votes on commutations, and votes to confirm members of certain boards in the state, including the parole board. Members of the Governor’s Council are elected for two-year terms representing one of eight districts that cover the state. The lieutenant governor presides over the Governor’s Council and breaks tie votes.
The Fourth District of the Governor’s Council includes the following municipalities: Abington, Boston (Ward 1 Precinct 15; Ward 3 Precincts 7, 8, 14, 15, 16; Ward 4 Precincts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11; Ward 5 Precincts 1, 13, 14; Ward 6 through 20), Braintree (Precincts 3B, 4B, 6A), Cohasset, Dedham, Duxbury, Hanover, Hingham, Holbrook, Hull, Marshfield, Norwell, Norwood, Quincy, Rockland, Scituate, Walpole, Westwood, and Weymouth.
New to NewBostonPost? Conservative media is hard to find in Massachusetts. But you’ve found it. Now dip your toe in the water for two bucks — $2 for two months. And join the real revolution.
