The 116 Massachusetts delegates and eight alternates to the Democratic National Convention and other party-connected attendees are scheduled to hear next week from a constellation of elected officials at daily breakfasts before connecting with Democrats from around the country at caucus meetings and convention proceedings.
The MassDems delegation plans to stay at the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk in downtown Chicago for the convention, which runs Monday, August 19 through Thursday, August 22. The state party plans to host a breakfast there each morning starting at 7 a.m. (8 a.m. Eastern). Once delegates fill their plates, guest speakers will take the microphone starting at 7:30 a.m. each morning.
Party officials said the breakfast lineups will include Governor Maura Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, Attorney General Andrea Campbell, U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, U.S. Representatives Katherine Clark and Lori Trahan, and others from Massachusetts. Out-of-staters including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, and U.S. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland are also expected to address Bay Staters. Details were still being finalized Thursday, August 15.
After the breakfasts, most of the daily convention activities are to take place at the McCormick Place Convention Center, including caucus meetings. Party officials said Healey is expected to participate Monday, August 19 in a panel discussion at the LGBTQ Caucus alongside Governor Jared Polis of Colorado. Markey is expected to participate in a climate-related caucus event Wednesday, August 21.
The evenings will see the action shift to the United Center, where the convention is expected to gavel in for official business late each afternoon. Monday evening’s proceedings are scheduled to feature President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, officials said. Tuesday is set for former President Barack Obama to take the stage in his hometown along with the roll call of all 57 delegations and the still-unannounced keynote speaker. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is expected to accept the nomination for the vice presidency Wednesday night, and Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to give her speech accepting the party’s presidential nomination Thursday night.
Healey is expected to speak at during the official convention proceedings, but details of her speaking slot were not available Thursday, August 15.
