Five Liberal Democrats That Ian Cain, Republican U.S. Senate Candidate, Has Supported In Recent Years

A Republican running for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts has backed several progressive Democrats for elected office in recent years.
Quincy City Council president Ian Cain has been a registered Republican since February 29, 2024, a Quincy City Clerk employee told NewBostonPost by telephone on Friday, August 30. Before that, he was unenrolled until 2019 — and a registered Democrat before that. Cain has been on the Quincy City Council since January 2016.
However, as an unenrolled, Cain frequently backed liberal Democrats.
Here are five liberal Democrats Cain has supported in recent years.
1. Michelle Wu
You know that strong conservative mayor that Boston has, Michelle Wu?
Cain endorsed her 2021 mayoral bid in December 2020 — when it looked like she was challenging then-incumbent Marty Walsh to his left.
“Over the last few years, Michelle and I have worked together on developing pathways for the next generation of political leadership in the Commonwealth,” Cain said in a press release from the Wu campaign at the time. “I’m now proud to support Michelle in her candidacy for Mayor of Boston. In a sea full of nonsense and political pandering, look no further for a person with a rare blend of intellect, empathy, authenticity, and, most importantly, integrity. While I live on the opposite side of the banks of the Neponset River in Quincy, as a good neighbor in Boston, Michelle has been and will continue to be an ally to our city. I look forward to continuing our work together and to seeing a leader of my generation, who holds a bold vision, take the reins and carry our capital city into the future.”
2. Kim Driscoll
Remember when Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll asked Bay Staters to house migrants in their private residences in August 2023?
The same Driscoll who often raised taxes during her lengthy tenure as mayor of Salem, where she often considered running for higher offices before finally running for lieutenant governor in 2022?
Cain supported her for lieutenant governor in 2022.
He donated $200 to her on July 14, 2022, according to the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance.
3. Andrea Campbell
You know how Andrea Campbell voted to provide 12 weeks of paid abortion leave for both men and women as a member of the Boston City Council? The policy so crazy that shortly after NewBostonPost broke the news, former Vice President Mike Pence mentioned it in a speech?
Cain supported that Andrea Campbell for Massachusetts Attorney General, donating $200 to her campaign on June 22, 2022, according to state Office of Campaign and Political Finance.
That’s the Andrea Campbell who co-hosted a Drag Queen Story Hour for little kids earlier this summer.
4. Christopher Dempsey
Let’s start with some praise for our current state auditor, Diana DiZoglio.
She’s doing a good job advocating for transparency and props to her for leading the November 2024 ballot question to give her office the authority to audit the Massachusetts legislature.
While DiZoglio was running for Auditor in the Democratic primary, she had an opponent who ran to her left: Christopher Dempsey.
Dempsey received endorsements from Progressive Massachusetts, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, the Massachusetts Democratic Party, Bay State Stonewall Democrats, 350 Massachusetts (left-wing environmental group), and five Somerville city councilors who support polyamory.
Sorry, we left one of his backers out: Ian Cain.
Cain donated $200 to Dempsey on December 27, 2021, according to the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance, supporting him over DiZoglio.
5. Setti Warren
Cain has described himself as a Charlie Baker Republican in recent interviews — except he supported a Baker opponent when the Baker sought a second term.
Cain donated $1,000 to then-Newton Mayor Setti Warren in 2017: $750 on December 29, 2017, and $250 on June 12, 2017, according to the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance.
Warren announced a run for governor on May 17, 2017, before dropping out on April 26, 2018. Warren intended to run against Baker, who enjoyed high approval ratings and bipartisan support.
Regardless of how one feels about our former governor, he was someone that it was safe for many Democrats to support. Yet Cain backed a progressive Democrat instead.
