A Different Kevin McCarthy Almost Makes The Boston Red Sox Opening Day Roster

April 1, 2021

The Boston Red Sox set their Opening Day roster this week — and Kevin McCarthy didn’t make it.

No, this is not the U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader from California, but rather a 29-year-old pitcher.

McCarthy pitched in 169 games for the Kansas City Royals between 2016 and 2020 and posted a 3.80 Earned Run Average in 191.2 innings. He pitched in five games for the team in 2020 and over six innings, he allowed three runs (4.50 ERA).

McCarthy addressed his name in an interview with WEEI earlier this year.

“I will always get messages from some people who are P.O.’d about something going on, thinking I’m the congressman,” he said. “I’m like, ‘I can’t help you out here.’ I’m sure he might have it vice versa. If I have a bad game he might get some hate mail.”
