Amy Carnevale Elected As Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Over Jim Lyons

February 1, 2023

The Massachusetts Republican Party has a new chairman.

State committeewoman and lobbyist Amy Carnevale of Marblehead defeated Jim Lyons in the chairman race on Tuesday night. Carnevale defeated Lyons 37-34; only state committee members were able to vote in the race. Lyons had served as the chairman of the party since 2019.

Carnevale generally drew support from the moderate faction of the state committee, although sources told NewBostonPost before the race that whoever ended up winning would need the votes of at least a few conservative members.

So the party tonight took a fresh start and a fresh approach to get back to a strategy of trying to win elections and get Republicans elected to office,” Carnevale said after the vote on Tuesday, January 31, according to WBUR. “Clearly, the vote was a signal that our party is going to take a different track moving ahead. And I’m taking that as a signal that we also need to reach out to unenrolled voters in order to get Republicans elected to Congress, to positions up and down the board.”

Carnevale was elected to a two-year term. The next party chairman election is scheduled for January 2025.
