Another Democratic Socialist Wins A Massachusetts State Legislature Seat

A seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives flipped red yesterday — and not in the Republican sense of the word.

Democratic socialist Erika Uyterhoeven of Somerville, founder of Act On Mass, in the 27th Middlesex District (which consists of parts of Somerville) won her primary battle against Somerville resident Catia Sharp last night. Sharp worked in the Massachusetts Executive Office for Administration and Finance under Governor Deval Patrick.

Uyterhoeven got 62 percent of the vote to Sharp’s 38 percent, as the Associated Press reports.

There is not a Republican running in the district, so Uyterhoeven will most likely succeed state Representative Denise Provost (D-Somerville) in the Massachusetts House.
