Bernie Sanders Led Rhode Island In Presidential Write-In Votes In 2020

January 23, 2023

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders was the most popular write-in candidate for president in Rhode Island in 2020, recent data reported on by The Providence Journal reveals.

President Joe Biden had no problem defeating then-president Donald Trump in the Democratic stronghold; Biden got 59.4 percent of the vote, while Trump got 38.6 percent.

However, the Rhode Island Board of Elections finally tallied up the write-in votes for president earlier this month — in January 2023 for a November 2020 presidential election.

The state found that Sanders (I-Vermont) received more write-in votes than anyone else. The self-described democratic socialist, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Party’s nomination, received 204 write-in votes.

The other top write-in vote recipients were Green Party presidential nominee Howie Hawkins (174 votes) and Kanye West (131 votes), who ran as a pro-life independent.

In all, there were 2,759 write-in votes in the 2020 presidential election in Rhode Island — just 0.5 percent of the 512,704 votes cast.
