Bernie Sanders May Support Primarying Two Of His Colleagues

January 21, 2022

Are U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) and U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-Arizona) good enough to be members of the U.S. Senate?

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), a self-described democratic socialist who caucuses with the Democratic Party, doesn’t think they’re left-wing enough.

Asked by The Associated Press if he’d be open to supporting primary challengers for both of them, Sanders said, “Well, yeah.”

Both Manchin and Sinema have irked many Democrats in the past year because they opposed President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better social spending bill and don’t want to eliminate the filibuster in the U.S. Senate.

Both Manchin and Sinema would be up for re-election in 2024, if they run again.
